The cartridge filter requires no backwashing. The paper or poly filter elements need to be clean 1-2 times per season depending on the size of your pool, and the size of your filter. Elements can last 3/5 years or longer. Most customers have a back up set and rotate for most effective cleaning.
A DE filter has elements usually called fingers, and use a powder called DE to coat the fingers. Dirt and debris are trapped on the powder, then backwashed to waste. This process is repeated as the filter pressure rises and DE becomes full of dirt and debris. Backwashing usually occurs once per month or more often for larger pools or pools with heavy bather load.
The sand filter uses “sand” as the filter element. The pool water comes in on top and gravity/pressure drops down through the sand filtering the water befoee returning to the pool. This type of filtration usually required backwashing a few times per month. Sand is replaced every 3 years or so depending on various factors.
